Born in 1968 in Sydney as Julia Carolyn Margaret Morris, this Australian comedian, actress, writer and television personality has “been there, done that”. Julia had a comic element to her character since her schooldays, and although it got here into trouble from time to time, she was known for coming up with original one-liners ever since those early years.
Most of Morris’s performances focus on herself and her own personal experiences and her take on life in general. She first appeared on television at the age of 17 in 1985 in a talent show where she sang “Holding Out for a Hero”, and received the first prize. However, it was not until 1995, through her series Full Frontal, that she gained national recognition.
Julia moved to the UK in the year 2000, where she gained recognition as a talented comedian. She hosted several BBC TV shows in the UK, and appeared in most of the major international comedy festivals held during that period. In 2002, Julia Morris won the Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Festival. She was named “London’s Comedy Performer of the Year” by Time Out in 2004. Julia also wrote and performed in three shows on London’s West End.
Back in Australia from 2007 onwards, Julia made steady progress into the Australian comedy circuit. She won It Takes Two of Channel 7 in 2008 and in the next two years, was nominated for the Helpmann Award. Morris’s memoirs entitled Don’t you know who I used to Be? received an overwhelming response in 2009.
Julia Morris’s better-know appearances are on It Takes Two, where she won the contest performing with singer David Hobson, Spicks and Specks and Thank God You’re Here. Among other awards and achievements, Morris won the 2011 series of The Celebrity Apprentice Australia in 2011, and hosted Australia’s Got Talent in 2013. Her latest assignment is co-hosting I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! on Network Ten.
Julia is married to Dan Thomas who is a renowned British comedian. They have two daughters, Ruby Charlotte and Sophie Rebecca. Dan bought Julia a title online in 2003, “The Lady of the Manor of Gosforth”. It is not legally valid, but she regularly uses this title as a prop in her stand-up routines.
